Is it better to make or buy fondant?

It's all about finding ways to indulge our love for cake decorating without sacrificing precious time from our busy lives…”

Every so often, I’m asked if I make my own fondant from scratch. Truth be told, I’m firmly on team pre-made fondant and here’s why;

TIME & CONVENIENCE

Making fondant from scratch can be such a time-consuming process. For cake lovers with a bustling schedule (which I’m sure is most of us, right?), opting to buy pre-made is a lifesaver. It's all about finding ways to indulge our love for cake decorating without sacrificing precious time from our busy lives!

CONSISTENCY & QUALITY

Store-bought fondant is churned out under controlled conditions, which means each batch is consistent in quality. This reliability makes it a breeze to work with and guarantees dependable results, which I feel is especially important for decorators who are new to fondant or lack experience with making it from scratch.

STABILITY & SHELF LIFE

Pre-made fondant boasts a longer shelf life and superior stability compared to its homemade counterpart, thanks to the magic of preservatives and stabilisers. This makes it ideal for storing and using over an extended period, reducing waste and ensuring freshness.

VARIETY

Store-bought fondant is available in a wide range of colours, flavours, and formulations, allowing us decorators to choose the perfect option for our specific needs and preferences. For example, did you know that you can buy a brand of fondant that guarantees ‘no cracking’? Or that you can buy extra firm varieties that help to combat humid climates?

In the end, the choice between homemade and pre-made fondant boils down to what works best for you. For me, the convenience, consistency, and variety of pre-made fondant make it the clear winner. Whichever path you choose, keep creating and enjoying those deliciously decorated treats!
